FRIDAY, May 13 -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration late Friday gave approval to Victrelis (boceprevir), one of a new class of drugs aimed at fighting chronic hepatitis C infection. According to The New York Times , the new drug appears to help more people clear the virus from their system in a shorter time span than older medications. In one trial sponsored by the drug's maker, Merck, 44 percent of patients were successfully treated within 28 weeks instead of the typical 48.

FDA Warns About Teething Medication Main Ingredient Benzocaine Linked to Rare, Serious Disease

May 5, 2011 -- The FDA has issued a warning to consumers about the use of benzocaine, the main ingredient in over-the-counter liquids and gels used to reduce teething pain in very young children. Benzocaine is associated with a rare but serious condition called methemoglobinemia, which greatly reduces the amount of oxygen carried through the bloodstream. In the most severe cases, the condition can be life-threatening.

 Our institutional guidelines at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center have used the same 4 emetic risk categories used by all the major guideline groups: high, moderate, low, and minimal. For the high-emetic-risk chemotherapy programs, including the combination of an anthracycline and cyclophosphamide, we recommend using palonosetron, dexamethasone, and aprepitant. In our practice setting, the tablets of aprepitant are the most effective, and we also use tablets of dexamethasone, but again, that may vary depending on your practice setting.
