to be hospital pharmacist 4

In most hospitals, your first introduction to your workplace is through
an induction period during which you are shown many different areas and
meet many new people.
In some places your induction is very short but in
others (especially if they are a large pharmacy department) it may last for
weeks. Don’t expect to be doing much in your induction; the point is that you are being shown things and so you do not encounter very many opportunities where you can demonstrate anything competently!

The point of the induction is to familiarise you with your workplace
and your work colleagues and, if you are one of many pre-regs, with your
fellow pre-regs. Although it may not seem like you are doing very much in
your induction, your managers are thinking about ensuring that you settle in
and that the pre-regs can work together as a team. The more settled you feel,
the easier you will find the year. You will have plenty of time in your rotations
to demonstrate your competence, so enjoy the induction; it may be the only
time during the year when you can be relatively relaxed!

Before you even start to think about all the things that you need to
achieve during your pre-reg training, you first need to get to know your
workplace. Needless to say, it is very useful to become familiar with the
layout of the hospital. Hospitals vary immensely in size, and in the ease with
which you find your way around. Generally, the older the hospital, the more
difficult it is to find your way around, and you may find yourself on a halfhour
detour as you suddenly find yourself somewhere you’ve never been
before. In your first few weeks, it is definitely worth familiarising yourself
with your surroundings during a break or a lunchtime – if not for yourself,
then for the patients who will be asking you, as an official-looking member of
staff, for directions. Find out some important things, such as where to eat and
drink, and alternative entrances and exits to the pharmacy department and
the hospital.
