Symptoms in the Pharmacy :Respiratory Problems (10)

Symptoms for direct referral   Hoarseness Hoarseness is caused when there is inflammation of the vocal cords in the larynx (laryngitis). Laryngitis is typically caused by a self-limiting viral infection. It is usually associated with a sore throat and a hoarse,

When you arrive at the hospital you will no doubt meet your tutor at some point during the induction. It is important to make a good impression on the tutor as early as possible. For some of you, you may find that you do not actually meet your tutor until a few weeks into the year because they are on holiday or have other commitments.

Sore throat Most people with a sore throat do not consult the doctor – only about 5% do so and many will consult their pharmacist. Most sore throats that present in the pharmacy will be caused by viral infection (90%), with only one in ten being due to bacterial infection, so that treatment with antibiotics is unnecessary in most cases. Clinically it is almost impossible to differentiate between the two. The majority of infections are self-limiting. Sore throats are often associated with other symptoms of a cold.

Getting to know your tutor The first time that you find out who your tutor is going to be is when you send in your RPSGB notification form to the hospital for the tutor and manager to complete, before it goes back to the RPSGB with your cheque for payment for the pre-reg year. At this point this is just a name on the form; you probably don’t know who this person actually is.

Practical points Diabeties In short-term acute conditions the amount of sugar in cough medicines is relatively unimportant. Diabetic control is often upset during infections and the additional sugar is not now considered to be a major problem. Nevertheless, many diabetic patients may prefer a sugar-free product, as will many other customers

Group dynamic and the pre-regear There are many theories relating to group dynamics in the management literature but one theory that sits comfortably in the pre-reg year relates to the stages of group formation and how groups go through the same stages.

Cough remedies: other constituents   Antihistamines   Examples used in OTC products include diphenhydramine and promethazine. Theoretically these reduce the frequency of coughing and have a drying effect on secretions, but in practice they also induce drowsiness. Combinations of antihistamines with expectorants are illogical and best avoided.

Another way to look at the team is to think of the members differently: Players: make it (make things happen); these are the people who embrace the workload and are actively involved in what is going on.

What makes a team ? There is a plethora of literature about teams and what makes a good team in management books; we do not deal with this here because it is outside of the scope of this book. We have intentionally avoided trying to identify a list of qualities that make a good team because of the ready availability in existing literature.

YOU, THE PRE-REGS AND THE WORKING TEAM You will generally be with more than one pre-reg in your training programme because it is very rare for hospitals to offer pre-reg places for one person only. You may be in a team of just 2 pre-regs or you may have up to 15 others in your team in a larger hospital; generally teaching hospitals tend to take more pre-regs.

Cough Coughing is a protective reflex action caused when the airway is being irritated or obstructed. Its purpose is to clear the airway so that breathing can continue normally. The majority of coughs presenting in the pharmacy will be caused by a viral URTI. They will often be associated with other symptoms of a cold. The evidence to support the use of cough suppressants and expectorants is not strong but some patients report finding them helpful.

MALE IMPOTENCE: Sexual Enhancment Naturally

Image
Sexual Enhancement Naturally Some researchers believe one of the major causes of impotence in males is high or low blood sugar, caused by eating foods high in sugar and empty carbohydrates. A typical fast food diet such as a hamburger, fries, and a coke with a candy bar snack does not support male glands, or aid in the production of sperm - a key factor in the ability to perform sexually.

Colds and flu The common cold comprises a mixture of viral upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs). Although colds are self-limiting, many people choose to buy OTC medicines for symptomatic relief. Some of the ingredients of OTC cold remedies may interact with prescribed therapy, occasionally with serious consequences. Therefore, careful attention
