Another way to look at the team is to think of the members differently:

  • Players: make it (make things happen); these are the people who
embrace the workload and are actively involved in what is going on.
They will often make sacrifices in their own work for the benefit of the
team. These are obviously the best types of people to work with and it
would be good if you were an active player in any team in which you
work.

  • Spectators: hope it and want it (don’t like change and can be cynical);
these are the people who like to sit on the outside; they work hard and
have opinions on what is going on, but don’t like to get involved too
much. They are happy just doing the work required of them and then
going home.
  •   Corpses: no idea, don’t care (have always done it like this); these people
may not care so much about the workplace and have no idea what is
happening in the department or the profession in terms of developments.
They are just there to do their jobs. They will be the ones who do
not read the Pharmaceutical Journal or keep themselves up to date, and
you may feel somewhat demoralised working alongside them. Trust us;
these people do exist!

  •   Terrorists: stop it (tend to respond to people who are always negative
and challenging); these people are generally resistant to change and
have always done things a certain way. They won’t take kindly to your
well-intentioned suggestions of changing anything. They usually work
behind the scenes and are very negative; they may ‘use’ you in their
game to prevent something from happening and it is worth watching
out for anything out of the ordinary with which you find yourself
getting involved. Remember that in any department there are always
politics of some sort going on.
